What Are Archive Research Services

We will research your family names in state and local Ukrainian archives, obtain photo copies of the relevant documents and provide their English translations (certified if necessary).

Research is available for the following types of documents:

  • Metric (birth, marriage, death and divorce) records
  • Census and other statistic records
  • Draft registrations and tax lists
  • Property and notary records
  • Jewish community records
  • Immigrations lists, school records and business directories
Sometimes in the course of archive researches we find relatives of the clients they are not aware of. If the client's initial research authorization does not explicitly ask us to look for any lost relatives, we contact them only if the client authorizes us to do so after additional thorough verification.

Who Performs the Research

There are many experienced and diligent archivists employed by Ukrainian archives. We cooperate with them, but all research assignments are carried out by our staff (of EuroScope or its Ukrainian branches). This allows us to keep the research process under control and be able to inform the client about the progress at any given moment.

Ours researchers have over a decade of experience: we were the first Ukrainian business that started providing this type of services in late 80-ies both on our own and in cooperation with Routes to Roots Foundation

How Long Does It Take

Once the research is authorized by the client, it generally takes about three months to complete the research. Actual time - as well as cost - depends on the amount of material to be researched, number of locations (multiple archives), number of family names to be researched, size of the town(s) and population, how common/unique family names are, etc. We usually give pretty accurate time estimate once you provide us with your initial data. Drop us a line - together we will figure everything out.

How Much Does It Cost

For a typical research assignment charges include:
  • Administrative time (obtaining the initial family data from the client; its processing, analysis, and verification)
  • Research process
  • Translation of the materials
  • Research expenses include: transportation, accommodation, meals, communication expenses, and archive charges.

The minimum cost of an archive research assignment is $1300. Specific price quotes are provided after the research assignment is defined, for - as well as time - the cost depends on the amount of material to be researched, number of locations (multiple archives), number of family names to be researched, size of the town(s) and population, how common/unique family names are, etc. We usually give pretty accurate estimate once you provide us with your initial data. Please, feel free to write.

Saving tip 1: You can save considerably by reducing the time we spend on processing, analysis and verification of your initial data (the data you provide for us to know where to start and where to go). Please, see How To Submit Data.

Saving tip 2: by combining an archive research with ancestral town visit (pertinent to the research) you may pay less than for those two services separately.

How To Submit Data

If you use genealogy software

As most serious researchers nowadays, we use special software. Recently we have added many new features to it, and now we can directly import your data saved in the formats of the following software packages (in alphabetic order): Ancestral Quest, Brother's Keeper, Everyone's Family Tree, Family Origins, Family Roots, Family Gathering, Family Tree Maker, Master Genealogist, MyFamily, Roots (versions III, IV, and V), Personal Ancestral File (PAF), Ultimate Family Tree, Visual Roots.

Of course, you can also submit your data in GEDCOM format, but do so only if the package you use is not listed above. The reason for this is that various software packages - though claim to support the GEDCOM standard - have different implementations of it. So, when you save you data in GEDCOM format, some of it may be stripped off, and your software will not even tell you that. Before saving your data in GEDCOM format, please, read the help (look for the key words "Export", "Save as" and the like) .

If you do not use any software, you will have to make a list "by hand". Please, contact us for the instructions.

Please, do not send any of your data to us with your first inquiry.
