Quick Facts and HistoryThe administrative center of Kirovohrad Province (area - 24,600 sq.km, population - 1,251,000, the population of the city - 246,000).In the ancient times the area was inhabited by Scythians and proto-Slavic tribes. The northern part of the modern province in the 9th century was under the control of Kyiv Rus. In the 13th century it went under Lithuania, and in the 16th - under Poland. In the 16th century there were many Cossack settlements there, who protected the Slav territory from Tartar raids. After the war between Russia and Turkey (1735-39) - a part of Russia. In 1754 the St.Elizabeth Fort was founded, which in 1775 acquired the name Yelisavetghrad (the City of Elizabeth). Its modern name the city acquired in 1939 (after one of the Bolshevik leaders). For tourists having no special interest in staying in Kirovohrad it is just a place to have an overnight in transit between major tourist centers.

Places of InterestThe standard city tour usually includes several 19th-century churches, the ruins of the fort and the Local History Museum.
For those interested in the history of drama the two museums of I.Karpenko-Kariy (Tobilevych) can be recommended. One is in the city, the other - at the farm Nadiya, the birthplace of the playwright, 30 km of Kirovohrad.
