Quick Facts and HistoryThe administrative center of the Khmelnytskiy Province (area - 20,600 sq.km, population - 1,524,000; the population of Khmelnytskiy - 217,000).The area is a part of the ethnographic zone of Podillya. Archeological excavations proved that the area was inhabited in ancient times (300,000 years ago). The Slavic tribes which inhabited the area had developed agricultural skills already in the 2nd century A.D. In the 9th century Podillya became a part of Kyiv Rus, and in the 12th century of Galicia-Volyn Principality (the period of the most rapid economic development). In 1241 the area was invaded by Tartar-Mongols. In the 14th century in fell under the Lithuanian control, and in the 15th century it was annexed to the Polish Kingdom. The first mention of the city (it was named Proskuriv) dates back to the 15th century. In 1672-99 - under Ottoman Turks. At the end of the 18th century it became a part of Russia. From that time Proskuriv was an administrative center and center of trade, especially bread wholesale business. In 1954 renamed Khmelnytskiy in commemoration of the Ukrainian Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskiy. For tourists having no special interest in staying in Khmelnytskiy it is just a place to have an overnight in transit between major tourist centers. In some itineraries Khmelnytskiy could be a substitute for Vinnytsya and vice versa. Longer stays can be planned for tourists having ethnic roots in the area on request.

Places of InterestSince in the 19th century the city was completely destroyed by fire, there is no architecture older than 1822. The standard city tour usually includes a brief drive of the city and a visit to the Local History Museum.
