The population of the province - 1,536,000, of the city - 305,000. A major river port on the Dnipro (since the great reservoir was completed), and a very green city. Cherkasy is a city with old Cossack traditions. Founded in 1384, by the late 15th c. it became a major stronghold against the Tartars repeatedly invading Ukraine. The history of the city and many nearby towns is closely connected with the Cossack-Tartar wars, Koliyivshchyna uprising and other (mostly bloody) pages of the Ukrainian history. In 1793, after the Hetmanate was completely abolished, the area became a part of the Russian Empire. The city is largely rebuilt, so - unless you are specifically interested in the history of Cossacks and the endless wars they waged, the Hetman State, the Haydamaks Movement, etc. - there is hardly anything worth an overnight. But if you are, with a good guide such a visit (including nearby towns) may give you the feel of those times when human blood was cheaper than wine, real men drank it (wine - not blood!) instead of water and used to sleep with their swords by the bed.

Places of InterestThe city is largely rebuilt, and the city tour is usually very brief. The Museum of Local History displays the development of the area since the 16th century, through the Cossack-Tartar wars and later vicissitudes.
