The Bygone Days

It all started in the late 80-ies, when the Soviet government finally admitted that private enterprise is not actually a crime. Having left their jobs with the government-operated Intourist and Sputnik, a group of guides and tour managers started Marco Polo Agency, the first privately owned incoming tour operator in Ukraine.

It was tough back then. Some people gave up and left for industries less microcontrolled by the government. The ones, that could hardly imagine themselves running a convenience store or a pizza place, stayed and kept trying. Marco Polo, then - Dialog, IntelOptim, Travel Ukraine Agency...

The New Times

Today most of us (pioneers of private tour industry in the ex-USSR) have our own businesses. We live in different countries, some - far apart. We don't see each other much, but there is a bright side to it - we have the network of tour operators so efficient and reliable even very big companies can only dream of.

EuroScope is the smallest and the youngest of the Marco Polo's grand- grand- grandchildren. It started as the US representation of Travel Ukraine Agency in 1995 and became a separate business in winter 1997.

In September 1995 the first version of Paperless Guidebook to Ukraine was published, and Ukraine became the first ex-USSR independent nation to establish tourism web presence. Needless to say that the Ukrainian State Committee for Foreign Tourism didn't have anything to do with it or with any other form of promotion in the "virtual world". Thus, our site became the de facto official Ukraine tourism web site.

We are currently working on a similar web publication on Poland, though the progress is much slower than we would like it to be (in the meantime you may wish to check out our tours to Poland - not a guidebook, of course, but you will get some idea about the country).

If you have browsed through our Paperless Guidebook to Ukraine, you must have noticed that - though we are in the business of selling tours - the guidebook itself is objective (to the extent any human writing can be objective, of course). That's our approach - to let the customer get a clear picture of the country or a specific region, of the tourist infrastructure, resources, sites, etc. available there. Then he or she can make an informed decision and choose the tour that matches his or her interests, budget, etc. If no standard tour seems appealing, tell us what you have in mind, and we will develop a tour specially for you. That's what we are best at: delivering exactly what you want. Not sure what you want? Sounds familiar. Drop us a line - we'll help you to figure it out.

There are thousands of places selling packages to any destination you can think of. In most cases, though, they are all exactly the same, so that having returned after a week in Spain you can't tell the difference from the previous year's week in Thailand. That's because they are "machine-built": you pull out a discount air fare, add accommodation at a hotel that offers low weekend rates or has a promotion, slap airport-hotel transfers and a "general purpose" orientation tour over them, top it all with a dinner at a place where you won't ever see a single local - done in about 30 minutes. Works for any destination in the world. The problem is: you don't get the feel of the place.

All of our tours are "hand-made". We know exactly what is worth seeing in each of the countries we operate in. As "insiders", we have intimate knowledge of the tourist resources and let you use them to the full. Our main specialty is customized individual (though we never say "No" to groups) tours to the countries of the former Soviet Union and "Eastern Block".

Among our major customers were:

  • Kraus Group (since 1997 - a division of RNG Group). For them we translated the promotional materials and technical documentation for their natural gas and liquid propane vehicle refueling systems line, as well as handled all travel arrangements and cultural orientation for groups of executives and sales staff visiting Poland, Ukraine and Russia. You may wish to read the travelog of one of the participants.
  • CBS News 48 Hours - travel and shooting sites arrangements, interpretation for Tom Fenton and his group working on the program on Ukrainian Catholic Church.
  • BBC World Service - travel arrangements and interpretation for Bridget Kendall's series on Ukrainian Catholic Church and Ukrainian nationalism.
  • Philips Lighting. For several years we took care of all travel needs of their personnel in Ukraine and Poland.
  • Global Financial Systems established their presence on the Ukrainian market back in the "Soviet era", and we helped them to concentrate on business, not on looking for hotels, getting plane tickets or overcoming language barriers.
  • Lviv Judaica Center - interpretation at the nation-wide conference on Jewish holidays and traditions.
  • R. J. Reynolds International (a Nabisco company) - interpretation of the talks on Lviv Tobacco Factory acquisition.
  • Routes to Roots Foundation - customized Jewish genealogy tours and archival research.
  • National Geographic Magazine - all arrangements for the team that worked on the special issue on Ukraine.
Of course, we provide our services to anyone who needs them: small businesses, humanitarian and religious missions, individuals, etc. The above list consists only of "big names" simply because they speak for themselves.

Some of our customers kindly agreed to share their opinion about our services with you. Not to make these people easy prey of e-mail spammers and phone salesmen, we do not post their e-mail addresses or phone numbers on this site. If you already have made definite plans and are looking for someone to implement them, write to us. We will discuss your plans, suggest solutions for you to consider and - if you still need references - put you in touch with one of our customers in your area.
